On October 7, 1998, in Laramie, Wyoming, two men named Aaron McKinney and Russel Henderson offered Matthew a ride home. He accepted, and McKinney and Henderson drove him out to a remote area, beat him, robbed him, tied him to a fence, and left him to die. Why? Because Matthew was gay. He was found 18 hours later and died on October 12, he died in a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado.
This is one of the most famous and controversial hate crimes in the history of the United States. People have tried to say that it ws all because of drugs, but McKinney and Henderson admitted to it being a hate-motivated crime.
Matthew's murder sparked a nation-wide gay rights revolution. The Matthew Shepard Act is back in Congress and, if passed, will add "sexual orientation" to the legal definition of a hate crime.
No one has the right to hurt someone just because they're gay. Matthew will always be remembered by his family, his friends, and his country.
Matthew, thank you for inspiring us all to make change.
